Helping Children and Teens Build Meaningful Connections

For many children and teens with autism, social interaction doesn’t always come naturally. They may want to make friends or join conversations but struggle with knowing what to say, how to respond, or how to read social cues.

At Thrive Autism, our Adolescent Social Skills Program uses the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to help children and teens learn, practice, and master the skills needed to connect with others their age.

What Is the Adolescent Social Skills Program?

This program is designed for children and teens who can:

  • Hold short conversations
  • Show interest in interacting with peers
  • Need support learning how to do it effectively

Using evidence-based ABA strategies, we focus on teaching:

  • Conversation skills – starting, joining, and maintaining conversations
  • Friendship building – making and keeping friends, handling conflicts
  • Problem-solving skills – navigating challenges and disagreements
  • Emotional coping strategies – managing frustration, anxiety, or disappointment
  • Perspective-taking – understanding how others think and feel
  • Executive functioning skills – planning, organization, and self-control

Our sessions combine structured teaching with real-world practice, so teens can apply what they learn in natural settings.

Why Social Skills Training Matters

Strong social skills are essential for success in school, friendships, and life beyond childhood. Without support, children and teens with autism may:

  • Experience loneliness or isolation
  • Struggle with peer relationships
  • Have difficulty handling group activities in school or extracurriculars

With guidance, they can:

  • Build lasting friendships
  • Gain confidence in social settings
  • Develop coping tools for stress and conflict
  • Improve independence and self-advocacy

How the Program Works

Our BCBAs and therapists provide structured group or one-on-one sessions depending on your child’s needs. We create a supportive environment where teens can practice with peers, get feedback, and celebrate progress.

Sessions may take place:

  • In our clinic – small groups for peer practice
  • In schools – to support academic and social success
  • In the community – applying skills in real-life social settings

"Thrive has been a game changer in my son's life. We moved to Arizona a year ago and I was unsure of where to go for ABA. My son took the year off of ABA, but then I saw Thrive was opening. I quickly called and they got my son in quickly. We love their amazing staff members. They help my son work to become his best and he asks to go everyday. Thank you so much Thrive for being authentic and a fun environment for my child to become his best."
